Chalkboard Spice Tins

I have always had a problem finding my spices. My cabinet is up high, it is small, and I have so many bottles that I can never find anything! I love the look of the magnetic spice jars on the refrigerator. What I didn't like is the price, and I also didn't like that I couldn't see the name of the spice easily. Then I came up with the idea for this project.

Most of the spice tins I found online retail for about $3 each. That seemed high, so I set out to make my own. I also am in love with the "chalkboard look" at the moment. So I set out to make my idea a reality.

Here's are the supplies needed to make this project:

4 oz. metal tins
Scotch tape
Chalkboard Contact Paper
2" circle punch
Strong Magnets
Glue
White chalk marker
A few sheets of printer paper (not shown in the above picture)

You can click on the links above to see where I purchased many of the items.

To begin I cut my labels out of the Chalkboard Contact Paper. I was originally going to paint the lids, but that would have been messy and time consuming. I found the contact paper, and it really did the trick. I had trouble at first getting a good cut through the contact paper. It was just to flimsy to cut. I then taped a strip of contact paper onto a sheet of printer paper, and proceeded to cut the circles. Using the piece of paper gave the contact paper a little more stability.

Once I had my holes cut, I peeled off the back of the contact paper and stuck it on the lids. I made sure to smooth out any bubbles that appeared when I applied the paper. I then got out my liquid chalk marker and wrote the spice names on the lids.

Next I glued the magnets to the bottom of the tin. I used 4 magnets per tin, and it seemed to hold really well.

Let the glue dry, and the tins are ready to fill and use. I am excited to have my spices organized, and I did it at a very reasonable price - less than $1 a tin!!

Baked Eggs (Recipe)

My new Sunday morning must-have is baked eggs. They are very easy to make, there is hardly any cleanup, and they taste terrific! This is my basic recipe; you can add any other spices and ingredients that you like.

INGREDIENTS

Thin deli ham slices
Eggs
Green onions
Salt
Pepper
Shredded cheese

INSTRUCTIONS

Coat the cups of a muffin tin with nonstick spray. Put a piece of deli ham in each muffin cup making a "cup". Crack an egg into each cup, being careful not to break the yoke. Top each ham and egg pocket with salt, pepper and green onion slices. Bake at 380 degrees for 12 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Lift each ham pocket out using your fingers. The white will be set, but the yokes will be slightly runny. Cook longer if you do not like runny yokes. Serve with toast and enjoy!
